Universitas Bung Hatta Hosts Bung Hatta Open Karate Championship 2026 Across Sumatra

Universitas Bung Hatta organized the Bung Hatta Open Karate Championship 2026 se-Sumatera, officially opened by the Vice Rector III for Student Affairs, Cooperation, and Alumni, Dr. Zulherman, at GOR UNP on Friday (6/2/2026). Hundreds of karate athletes competed for a total prize of Rp35 million, along with medals and certificates of achievement.

In his remarks, Dr. Zulherman emphasized that the championship aims not merely to determine winners, but to build character, ethics, and moral values among participants. He stated that the event is designed to strengthen a champion mindset, enhance self-confidence, refine technical skills, and serve as a talent selection platform for national and international competitions.

Chairman of the Organizing Committee, Dr. Putranesia, S.T., M.T., added that the tournament seeks to identify promising athletes and provide competitive experience to improve their fighting mentality. Meanwhile, the Chair of FORKI West Sumatra, represented by Special Staff Drs. Firdaus Ilyas (Karate DAN VII), highlighted that karate development at Universitas Bung Hatta has been an integral part of student activities since the 1990s and encouraged participants to uphold discipline, courage, respect, and sportsmanship.

This championship contributes directly to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) through sports promotion, and SDG 4 (Quality Education) by fostering character development and lifelong learning beyond the classroom. It also supports SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) through collaboration with regional sports institutions and stakeholders.
