Universitas Bung Hatta and UMT Strengthen Marine Conservation through International Lecture Series

The Master’s Program in Aquatic, Coastal, and Marine Resources of the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences, Universitas Bung Hatta, in collaboration with Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT), organized an International Lecture Series on sustainable fisheries and marine development through an eco-archaeological approach in Marine Protected Areas (MPAs).

The program aligns with SDG 14 (Life Below Water), SDG 4 (Quality Education), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).

The lecture featured Prof. Madya Dr. Hasrizal from UMT, who presented “Sustainability of Fisheries and Marine Resources Through an Eco-Archaeology Approach in Marine Park.” The session was moderated by Dr. Harfiandri Damanhuri, S.Pi., M.Sc., and officially opened by the Head of the SP2K Master’s Program, Prof. Junaidi.

Prof. Junaidi emphasized that the International Lecture Series strengthens academic collaboration between Universitas Bung Hatta and UMT while enhancing the capacity of students and policymakers. He noted that the forum broadens perspectives on science-based and sustainable marine resource governance.

Dr. Harfiandri highlighted the relevance of maritime eco-archaeology for Indonesia’s western Sumatra coast, particularly the ecological value of shipwrecks that have evolved into habitats for coral reefs and key species such as sea turtles. He explained that these structures play an important role in supporting marine biodiversity within conservation areas.

As an annual agenda, the program fosters cross-border academic dialogue, joint research, and policy exchange to support Indonesia’s marine conservation targets and global sustainability commitments. Through this initiative, Universitas Bung Hatta and UMT reaffirm their commitment to advancing sustainable marine ecosystems for future generations.
