PKM-PM Bung Hatta University, Initiative Establishes “Galeri Bumi” to Reduce Marine Waste on Padang Beach
Padang, October 20, 2024 — In response to the escalating marine waste crisis, students and lecturers from Universitas Bung Hatta once again demonstrated their innovation and environmental concern through the Student Creativity Program for Education and Community (PKM-PM), themed “Galeri Bumi: Artworks from Marine Waste.” The activity, held at Pantai Patenggangan, Padang City, was led by Prof. Dr. Ir. Yusra, M.Si., alongside lecturer and fisheries extension officer Rosnita, S.Pi., M.Si.
🌱 From Waste to Art: The Spirit of Sustainability
Galeri Bumi was not merely an art exhibition but a creative transformation of environmental challenges into meaningful works of art. Over the course of three months—from July to October 2024—the PKM team collected more than 800 kilograms of marine debris, consisting mainly of plastic waste, styrofoam, and discarded fishing nets along the coastline. With technical assistance from local creators and art students, these materials were transformed into symbolic and thought-provoking art installations.
“We want to show that waste is not the end of the story—it can be the beginning of change. Every scrap of paper we pick up from the beach can become a material that opens people’s eyes,”
remarked Prof. Yusra during his opening address.
The program involved not only students from the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Science, but also local residents, fishermen, and fisheries extension officers. Educational sessions were conducted along the beach, featuring discussions on the benefits of recycling, the impact of marine waste on ecosystems, and practical steps toward sustainable living.
Rosnita, S.Pi., M.Si., the fisheries extension officer, explained:
“We are not only educating about fish landing techniques but also about environmental responsibility. This activity proves that extension officers can become agents of change at the community level.”
The long-term objectives of this initiative include:
• Reducing marine waste accumulation by 30% in affected areas within the next two years.
• Engaging 5,000 students from 20 schools in Padang City in recycling and environmental art programs.
Through Galeri Bumi, Universitas Bung Hatta continues to foster a culture of environmental awareness, transforming waste into creativity and empowering communities to take part in marine conservation efforts for a sustainable future.
