FTI Universitas Bung Hatta Conducts IoT and Solar-Powered Dragon Fruit Irrigation Survey in Tanjung Alai
Tanjung Alai — The Community Service Team (PKM) of the Faculty of Industrial Technology (FTI), Universitas Bung Hatta, conducted a field survey titled “Survey on the Development of an IoT and Solar Cell-Based Dragon Fruit Irrigation System in Nagari Tanjung Alai.” The program aims to identify the potential application of appropriate technology to improve dragon fruit cultivation. This initiative contributes to SDG 2 (Zero Hunger) and SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure) by promoting sustainable agricultural innovation.
The survey focused on assessing land conditions, water sources, and solar intensity while engaging directly with local farmers. The proposed system will utilize soil moisture sensors and solar energy to enable efficient and autonomous irrigation.
The project is integrated into the final assignment of students from the Renewable Energy Engineering Technology Study Program (TRET) at Universitas Bung Hatta. Students are actively involved in field data collection, needs analysis, and system design. This experiential learning model aligns with SDG 4 (Quality Education) by strengthening practical and technological competencies.
Prof. Reni, Dean of the Faculty of Industrial Technology and Head of the PKM Team, emphasized that the program reflects synergy between academia and community needs. “We want students not only to learn in classrooms but also to deliver relevant and sustainable technological solutions directly to society,” she stated. The Head of the Tanjung Alai Farmers Group expressed optimism that the system would improve productivity and reduce operational costs, especially during long dry seasons.
Through this initiative, Universitas Bung Hatta reaffirms its role in supporting regional development through technology-driven community service. The program highlights the university’s commitment to renewable energy innovation and sustainable agriculture. It also demonstrates meaningful partnership with local communities, contributing to SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).
