Dr. Harfiandri Speaks on Marine Conservation for a Sustainable Future at UiTM Malaysia
Universitas Bung Hatta strengthened its international engagement through a virtual seminar titled “Marine Conservation for a Sustainable Future” held in collaboration with Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Shah Alam, Malaysia, on 17 December 2025. Dr. Harfiandri Damanhuri, S.Pi., M.Sc., served as the keynote speaker representing Universitas Bung Hatta. The program contributes primarily to SDG 4, 13, 14, and SDG 17.
In his presentation, Dr. Harfiandri emphasized that nearly 70 percent of the Earth’s surface is covered by oceans, making marine ecosystems fundamental to global sustainability. He highlighted that rising global temperatures, approaching the 1.5°C threshold, demand stronger marine conservation policies and actions. Strengthening Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) and sustainable fisheries management are central to achieving SDG 14 targets.
He also underlined Indonesia’s commitment to the “30 x 45” conservation target, aiming to protect 30 percent of its marine areas by 2045. According to him, expanding MPAs will enhance fish stocks, preserve biodiversity, and improve coastal community welfare. Rehabilitation of coastal and small island ecosystems remains a strategic priority at both local and global levels.
The seminar also featured Prof. Madya Ahmad Zaini from Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP), who discussed renewable solar energy development in Malaysia. His presentation aligned with SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy) and demonstrated how solar integration can reduce electricity costs by up to 55 percent. The session broadened the sustainability discourse beyond marine conservation into energy resilience.
Initiated by Dr. Nurul Asyikin Ibrahim of UiTM, the seminar gathered participants from UiTM, UniMAP, and the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Science of Universitas Bung Hatta. This cross-border collaboration reinforces international academic networks, enhances institutional recognition, and supports key performance indicators related to global partnerships and collaborative learning. The event reflects Universitas Bung Hatta’s continued commitment to contributing to global sustainability agendas through academic diplomacy and expertise exchange.
