Fishermen Participate in Sea Love Technical Guidance at Bung Hatta University
fishermen from the Ulak Karang Utara, Ulak Karang Selatan, and Flamboyan sub-districts participated in technical guidance for the national Sea Love Month movement held by the Padang Coastal and Marine Resources Management Center (BPSPL), the Padang City Fisheries and Food Service, in collaboration with the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences, Universitas Bung Hatta, at the Balairung Caraka Hall, Kampus Proklamator I of Universitas Bung Hatta.
Dean of the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences, Prof. Dr. Yusra, M.Si., stated that the technical guidance was a manifestation and implementation of the existing collaboration between BPSPL Padang and the Padang City Fisheries and Food Service.
He also mentioned that the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences consistently plays an active role and participates in the Love the Sea movement implemented by the government through the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, through various student activities and community service programs. He stated that these activities are part of the strategy to achieve a blue economy and maintain the ecological sustainability and health of marine resources. He hopes that the event will further enrich and broaden the understanding that maintaining marine ecology and health is a shared responsibility.
Meanwhile, the Head of the Padang City Fisheries and Food Agency, Alfiadi, S.Sos.MM, in his introductory remarks, stated that the impact of marine debris is one of the major problems currently faced. Waste in fishing areas results in unhealthy fish habitats, stunted fish growth, and consequently, decreased fish catches.
Fajar Kurniawan, ST.M.Ap., Head of the Padang BPSPL, in his remarks before opening the technical guidance, stated that the government is again holding the Love the Sea Month campaign in several regions across Indonesia, including Padang City, with the goal of increasing the involvement and participation of fishermen and various stakeholders.
He explained that the technical guidance is part of a series of activities that provides education to fishing communities regarding waste management and understanding the sources of waste.
Also, in this event also invite Yenni Lusia, who has successfully managed waste under the name "Bank Sampah Hijau" (Green Waste Bank), and Doce Delson from Manabuang Sarok, PT Semen Padang. He hoped the participants would remain enthusiastic, as their significant contribution, leading to clean seas and healthy fish. In this section, the invited speaker stated that “Waste have negatively impacts to marine ecosystems, public health, and the environment”.
