Bung Hatta University Will Collaborate with ALKO Sumatra Kopi in Developing the Coffee Industry
Alko Sumatra Coffee, headquartered in the Gunung Kerinci region, has been supporting thousands of coffee farmers to enhance their production capacity, product quality, and value, while also expanding their global market (exports), preserving the environment, and empowering local communities. Its products are trusted by more than 100 brands worldwide. The company is now ready to collaborate and establish partnerships with Universitas Bung Hatta.
This was conveyed by Dr. Zulherman, S.T.,M.Sc, Vice Rector III for Student Affairs, Collaboration, and Alumni of Universitas Bung Hatta, after a meeting with Suryono, CEO of ALKO Sumatra Coffee, in Kerinci, during an industrial visit by students from the Faculty of Industrial Technology, on November 3, 2024.
Dr. Zulherman stated that the meeting was an important step in building a bridge between the academic and industrial sectors. He expressed hope that Universitas Bung Hatta’s involvement would bring new insights and research-based approaches to ALKO’s operations, particularly in improving coffee quality and empowering local communities. The university’s support is seen as a driving force for ALKO’s commitment to sustainability and innovation in the coffee sector.
Meanwhile, Suryono, CEO of ALKO Sumatra Coffee, welcomed the collaboration with Universitas Bung Hatta as a strategic move to strengthen ALKO’s capacity in producing high-quality and sustainable coffee. He believes that a partnership with academia will accelerate the company’s journey toward achieving that goal.
Suryono further stated that ALKO continues to expand its market reach to international buyers and explore digital tools to ensure traceability within its supply chain. He emphasized that partnerships with educational institutions such as Universitas Bung Hatta are essential to achieving these objectives.
Both Universitas Bung Hatta and ALKO agreed on the importance of research in improving sustainable practices. The university will provide support through studies and research projects focusing on coffee cultivation, which can help refine ALKO’s strategies and benefit local farmers in adapting to market demands. Both parties are optimistic that this partnership will create a sustainable farming model that not only benefits the coffee industry but also contributes positively to society and the environment.
