Mathematics Education Study Program of FKIP Bung Hatta University Conducts Community Service at SDN 36 Cengkeh
The Mathematics Education Study Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP), Bung Hatta University, once again demonstrated its commitment to improving the quality of primary education in Padang City through a community service activity. This time, the program was held at SD Negeri 36 Cengkeh, focusing on the use of digital technology in learning, particularly through simulations and online games.
In today’s digital era, technology-based learning has become a strategic solution to address challenges related to student engagement and teacher creativity. Through this training, the program aimed to encourage a transformation toward more interactive, engaging, and context-based learning.
The main objectives of the activity were to:
Enhance teachers’ abilities to design engaging and innovative mathematics lessons using simulations and online games.
Integrate digital technology into classroom learning in practical and realistic ways.
Build teacher capacity in managing independent, media-based learning.
Strengthen collaboration between higher education institutions and elementary schools in developing quality education.
The activity was carried out in three main stages:
Theoretical Session: Presentation on the principles of using simulations and games in learning, featuring practical examples of applications such as GeoGebra, Kahoot!, and PhET Simulations, which have proven effective in various regions.
Hands-On Practice: Teachers participated in simulated game-based learning sessions and developed simple games for mathematics topics such as fractions and geometry.
Collaborative Discussion: Participants discussed implementation challenges, digital classroom management strategies, and the planning of weekly game-based learning activities.
A total of 15 teachers from SDN 36 Cengkeh took part in the training, showing great enthusiasm, especially in designing fun and creative learning activities. Many teachers reported feeling more confident in integrating technology into their classrooms. Several have already begun designing lesson plans (RPP) incorporating game-based learning for the coming weeks. A teacher working group focused on digital learning was also established as a platform for communication and mutual support. The school has even started considering budget allocation for digital learning equipment.
This success proves that educational innovation does not solely depend on infrastructure but also on the readiness and creativity of teachers.
The activity represents a tangible contribution from the Mathematics Education Study Program of FKIP Bung Hatta University in promoting teacher professionalism and improving the quality of primary education in Padang City. With its creative, collaborative, and needs-based approach, this training serves as a pilot project for similar programs in other schools. In the future, the initiative is expected to expand through broader collaboration between universities, the Department of Education, and other schools to create a modern, inclusive, and meaningful learning ecosystem.
