Bung Hatta University Community Service Team Educates Students of SMAN 12 Padang on Waste Management
In support of the Widyaiswara Environmental Research Center (WRC) program of Bung Hatta University, the Community Service Team (PKM) conducted a socialization session on waste management for students of SMAN 12 Padang on Friday, October 4, 2024. The activity was led by Dr. Alfiqroam Kumar, M.Pd., AIFO as the team leader, assisted by Ir. Suryadimal, S.T., M.T., IPM, and Duskriadi, S.T., M.T. The main goal was to foster early environmental awareness and encourage the school to become a model of waste utilization through an independent waste bank.
The training aimed to build students’ capacity to sort, manage, and recycle waste into useful products. The team also hoped that SMAN 12 Padang could serve as an inspirational model for other schools in implementing local-scale waste reduction programs, aligned with global sustainability goals.
During the session, the PKM team delivered interactive materials on types of waste, waste segregation systems, recycling techniques, and the conversion of organic and inorganic waste into reusable products such as plant pots, fabric bags, and compost fertilizer. Students actively participated in a hands-on simulation of waste collection and classification, enhancing their practical understanding of the topic.
This activity not only raised environmental awareness but also served as a form of experiential learning relevant to the character and environmental education curriculum. Moving forward, the program may be integrated into extracurricular or student research projects.
Starting with schools, this small initiative is expected to create a significant impact in addressing the waste crisis. As a form of academic–environmental collaboration, this activity exemplifies an impactful and socially beneficial Community Service Program (PKM) implementation by Bung Hatta University.
